Often think that this time of year is time to slow down gardening. Well, I am going to tell you that it isn’t, it’s just the beginning of a new garden!

For the Flower Lovers, especially for our every hardworking Bee’s, now is the time to plant flowers such as: alyssum, calendula, carnations, daisies, lobelia, nasturtium, nemesia, pansy, poppy, primula, schizanthus, snapdragon, sweet pea, cosmos, and viola just to name a few.

If Vege’s are your forte’ then now is the time to plant root vegetables like: Broccoli, Cabbage, Leeks, Parsnips, Turnips, Onions, and Carrots. These are just a few that you can start with.

What about Fruit Tree’s? there are a variety of fruit tree’s that can be planted during Autumn, such as: Peaches’, Cherries, Apples and Plums, but don’t be concerned if they lose their leaves, as these varieties are all deciduous. In addition, to these you can still get away in some areas of the warmer areas of Australia, with planting Fruit trees like our favourites, Oranges, Lemons, Nectarines, Grapefruits and even Persimmons.

There you have it, the 5min “don’t stop gardening because its Autumn”, Get the gloves back on and dig in and get Dirty.

Fresh Air is Healthy Air - Clean your air naturally!

Back in 1989, NASA done a study on ways to purify Air in enclosed areas, such as all famous Space Station. Following this study, has led to other research about plants that filter air naturally, also removing particular toxins in the air.

With a little research on your behalf mixed with a little no-how, you too can benefit from this great benefit or cleaning the Air in your home. So if you are an avid gardener or just starting out here are a small list of plants that will Filter your home for the cost of a little love.

1.A popular one amongst the plant lovers would be the Spider Plant (above), now that doesn't mean there are spiders living in it, for its versatility, easy maintenance and propagation. Spider plants are tough and mighty, they can thrive in many environments indoors as longs as they are kept away from direct sunlight. So ensure they are in a cosy place, with filter or artificial light and they will get to work straight away. The spider plants are powerful at removing formaldehyde, toluene and xylene all chemicals found in synthetic fabrics, paints and glues. They have also been proved to lower carbon monoxide levels too.

            2. Snake Plant or also known as the Mother in-law's Tongue - Whilst there is much debate on this one, the facts are clear. These perform really well indoors with very little love and the occasional wipe down to keep them free of dust. With its unique colours, twist and strange correlation to the tongue shape, this is a powerful plant to have anywhere in the home to cleanse your air and remove the nasty toxins. Hardy and can tolerate neglect the Mother in-law's tongue It’s also very effective at eliminating airborne formaldehyde, nitrogen oxide, benzene, xylene and trichloroethylene, and just about all chemicals that can often be found in carpets, glues, paint and other interior fittings.

           3. Aloe Vera - The plant that not only cleans your air, looks awesome and has medicinal properties, this one is not to be missed. The Aloe Vera, is a superstar amongst the plant families, not only does it clean the air and produce oxygen, it's robust and tolerant enough for any position in your home. Drought tolerant and tough for many environments this one will be sure to thrive no matter the level of skill you have in the garden. The Aloe Vera plant absorbs VOCs often found in newly laid flooring, paint and glue, it takes in carbon dioxide and produces oxygen at night making it ideal for bedrooms in particular.

These are my three favourites, however there are countless varieties out there for your home or office. As per the study that NASA performed in 1989, they recommend 2 good sized plants per room, (approx 9m2) however I say the more the better, who doesn't want to breath fresh air?

There you have it the simply and basic start to bring the best air purifiers into your place.

Have an awesome day and DIG IN!

Healthy Eating and fresh food - we all know the benefits of eating healthy unprocessed food and the benefit on the body and mind by eating such food. Gardening and growing your own food is not only stimulating and rewarding to enjoy the fruits of your labor you are also feeding you body an abundance of nutrients and studies out there have shown that nutritious fresh food has positive effects on your mood!

Exercise and Fitness - Gardening can be physically demanding, however depending how you start and setup of your garden, it can have a major effect on this. However this is a good thing! even the smallest garden needs maintenance, and this is exercise, yes you read that right. Having a garden is not only beautiful to your home and a place to retreat too, it gives you exercise and can improve your fitness. We have all heard that fitness is good for the body and mind and exercise reduces stress and so on, so instead of slogging the footpath for hours, why not spend that time building and maintaining your garden and reap the benefits of the physical fitness and rewarding results!

Mental Health - Firstly i am not a Phycologist but have read many studies on gardens and mental health. So please research this subject as it is very interesting. My thoughts are Gardens of all types are great for the ones mental health, so do forget to take the time and sit and watch and see your gardens and the life that they bring to your home. Sitting and watching and just being present in the moment is great as it takes away the focus of day to day stresses and allows you to relax, perhaps create a mediation or quiet spot where you can go and be with nature.

There are my Three dot points of the benefits of gardening, with such great benefits to your health what is there not to love!. No you don't have to be a green thumb or be a great horticulturist to do this, just be and do it. There will be times that plants die, or your mint takes over every inch of space that you have but this is the fun of it! Acceptance of the situation and watching how things grow is a fabulous experience! Love the moment and share the experiences.

So find a spot and Just start, take your time and keep a slow pace that is good for you.

How to use and make compost for your garden

Compost - The hidden world in your garden.

Compost is possible one of the most beneficial actions that you can take to boost your gardens. Not only does it feed the little critters, such as worms, but it also boosts the nutrients to your plants, improves soil conditions, increases water absorption and the list goes on. Check out this simple to follow process and get the compost happening in your yard!

Whilst there is no set hard and fast rule to creating compost, the key to creating quality compost is to think like a little microbe and what they need to thrive. The fundamentals of life, air, water and food keep us hustling and bustling will get the micro organisms, worms and all the other creepy crawlies busy and they will soon transform your kitchen and garden scraps in beautiful compost that is healthy sweet and highly nutritious product for your plants, trees and vegetables.

A quick google search and you will find many compost setups, and you will mostly definently find the one that will be right for you. For conversation, I will suggest the big black bins that you see in many backyards.

As mentioned above, there isn't a right or wrong way to do composting, however a key fundamentals is to keep the balance right. So start out with Two compost bins (or whichever you choose) that way once one is full you can start the second one :) and the cycle begins.

            Hot Tip -

Be sure to protect your compost with some chicken wire or aviary mesh, You want it small enough to keep vermin and rodents out, but not small enough to let the bugs and critters in. If you have the upright bin type, simple screw some chicken wire to the base before you fill it.

The compost site should be placed in a position that is out of direct sunlight and away from any tree roots and be sure that it is sitting on open soil. This will create the perfect environment and before you know it the worms will be wriggling their way up to eat your leftovers. Keep filling one bin until it is full, and then leave it to decompose until it is a nice rich soil look.

Kick start your compost bin with some carbon neutral product that is full of air such as dry dead leaves and even some ripped up old news papers etc and give it gentle hose down with water. Then every time you add green waste to the bin, top with brown.

           Hot Tip -

Brown waste creates energy and green waste add nitrogen for growth.

There’s no secret recipe or ‘right or wrong’ to composting, keeping a balance will ensure that it decomposes nicely and maintains a happy environment for all those little microbes.

There you have, the simple kickstart and basic process of getting composting started at your place. The benefits are endless, and not only from the organic matter, but the compost will also save your pocket by providing beneficial nutrients in your garden.

           Companion Planting Tips and Benefits

            1. Muscle Protection

Let the muscle take the brunt! Pant hardy and tough plants to shelter more delicate and fragile ones. For example, you can plant hardy foliage with small flowers, so that they take the brunt of harsh conditions, and shelter the little fellas.

            2. Invite the Neighbours

What are the benefits of good insects! We all know about pollinators, so why don’t we introduce more plants to attract them, this will not only help your vegetables grow, but also control the harmful pests. Plants that can produce a surplus of nectar and pollen will keep the good insects around, so plant low ground covering plants that flower in and around your trees and gardens.

           3. Reduce Loss

There are many factors and variables outside of your control, such as climate variances such as severe weather, especially here in Australia. So companion planting plants together, will increase your chances of a high production and reduce the loss of crops and plants. Just think, a community that works together is much more productive, than a single person working on his/her own.

           4. Natural Defence

Just like a good game of sport, the best offence is a good defence. Use Natural smelling plants as a repellent. Just as we use Bug repellent to keep those pesky mosquitos away, use plants to keep bugs away from your crops/tree’s. For example, plant Basil with Tomatoes to provide protection from insects. A good search on the internet will bring up a multitude of combinations for you to try.

           5. Nutrient Providing Plants

Spending a lot of money on fertilisers? Did you know that if you plant certain plants in your garden they add nutrients to the soil, whilst also improving soil condition! WOW! That’s right, as the old saying goes, Two Birds – One Stone. Companion Planting at its best, try adding some Alfalfa to your gardens, not only can you eat it but it also adds Nutrients to the soil while improving soil structure and fertility or Beans and peas amongst your corn Crop, the beans and peas will climb the corn for support and add additional nitrogen to the soil. How about Garlic, plant with your roses, makes them smell sweeter, assist in fungal control and, you guessed it, adds sulphur to the soil. Incredible.

Simply Tips to attract Dragons to your garden

           1. Install a small pond with a boggy area, now we all can’t just head outside and dig a massive hole in the yard, however there are other options available. Create water sources in your yard, as big as you can manage. In addition, be sure to add perches such as stakes and even plants so they have places to land and hide. Don’t add fish! As the fish will eat the nymphs (babies).

           2. Make a safe place – Dragon flies can be a great asset to your garden, however there are things that we as avid gardeners do that can have adverse effects on their habitat. Don’t use pesticides around their habitat, avoid bug traps that may trap them and certainly don’t use bug zappers!

           3. Plants to attracts Dragon Flies – Given that they are insects, they do love plants, so what plants should you be planting? Water plants is a broad topic, however if we dive into this a bit deeper, I recommend the following. Floating plants that are not rooted are a great option and are necessary to their habitat. The female dragon flies will lay eggs underneath them, so look at types of water lilies for this. Submerged plants that are rooted, that will grow and rise above the water line are great also, as the dragon flies will use these for shelter and perching on from the nymph age through to adult hood, a good recommendation would be a water horsetail or similar.

SO, there you have it, 3 easy to follow simple steps to start attracting dragon flies to your place. Water Source, Boggy Environment and water plants. This doesn’t have to be a difficult task, be creative in your garden and use what you can. To create a little trickle water flow, pop on into your local hardware store and look for a simple solar powered pump. Remember, this doesn’t have to be done in a day, it can be ever evolving and changing.

Get out there and Dig In!

Bee's those hardworking little fella's, that if they didn't exist, we wouldn't either.

I don't need to go into detail and tell you why they are important, as we are all well aware that without them, life as we know would no exist. As we admire and reap the benefits of our gardens, how often do we actually stop and admire the hardworking Bee's that make it all possible. Without these buzzing busy bodies, we wouldn't have our plants pollinated. So lets stop, think and ponder, How can we help these threatened species, after all, despite everything, they continue to work for us without complaint.

Well depending who you talk to, what articles you read and what keyboard warriors tell you the reality is, they are threatened regardless if they are endangered or not. We can make a difference in any backyard and do our part to help them, as they help us.

Good Question, here are my simple tips to increase their presence in your garden/yard or even patio. It doesn't matter where you live every little step can help our Bee's to thrive.

           1. Bee loving Plants! just like people are drawn to the lovely smell of food, popcorn, coffee or a chargrilled steak on the Barbie, bee's love the smell of Heady perfumes. The following list are Bee favourites, and not only are they inexpensive, they can grown just about anywhere in the garden or even patio's. An added bonus, they are also relatively easy to propagate and expand, natural pest deterrents and can even be used in cooking!

Clovers. Let them grow, if you can or have the space to leave a patch grow in your yard, do so, how easy is that! Little less mowing, and the bee's will bee Thankful! and all it takes is less

           3. Bee Hives - We won't go much into detail on this subject, however if you can or have the space why not introduce a bee hive to your home. There are many varieties and types available so you could find one to suit your needs. Consider them homes for your in house workers that will love and care for all your plants. Whether you choose a native Bee (stingless) or honey Bee's they will be more than happy to help you in return for some loving sweetness of your flowers, and perhaps, if you get honey Bee's you will be rewarded with the best tasting honey in the world!

           4. Unlike above, if you don't want the hassle of getting a hive and setting it up, you could try these options. You can make/purchase native bee hives, and place them around your yard, and hope that

the little fella's find their way and set up home. This is a favourite of many gardeners, as native bee's don't sting! yet they still love to get neck deep in your plants.

           5. Lastly, if you have the space, why not contact a Bee' Farmer, and offer your land to them to place their hives. They will know the rules and regulations in certain area's, however this way you you will benefit and they will also. If they can increase their production, this will increase our Bee population, and who knows, they may pay you in HONEY!

There you have it, Lets bee Busy and open our yards to the wonderful life of the bee.

Thought... If every home invested 10mins a week to support the Bee population, what would the result be? let me know your thoughts!

Thank you again for popping by, and lets Bee Productive and Dig In!

Whilst these following steps won't see your tomatoes going rough like the 1978 Movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" they will cause havoc to your taste buds. What's better than fresh produce grown directly at home!

So lets get Red and Dig In!

Where to plant - Tomatoes love sun, and the more the better for these bright and beautiful little fella's. So if you are planting in the garden or in pots on the patio, be sure that they receive at least 6 hours of full sun per day. This is crucial to their health and growing. Once you have located your spot, its time to prep the soil. If you are planting in pots be sure to use a high quality potting mix from your local store, however, if you are planting in garden beds now is the time to spend a little effort and get it ready. Before planting seedlings, mix some organic matter through the soil with a fork, such as compost or even well broken down chicken manure this will ensure the plants will have plenty of...hmmm, delicious nutrients to absorb. We don't want them to go hungry now do we... Additionally, you can add a small amount of quality slow release fertilizer if you like.

Planting time, pull out the excavator and dig Deep. Now there is no hard and fast rule to planting tomatoes, though a good rule of thumb is a nice deep hole and approximately 50cm apart so that they have plenty of room to grow. When planting seedlings remove the bottom few leaves and dig in the stem, this will encourage the plant to grow new roots creating a strong foundation and larger root system so they can be stronger and also absorb all that chicken manure that you have mixed through the soil.

Mulch and water - now that we have located the spot, prepped the gardens/pots and planted deep, its time to Mulch and water. Mulch your babies well with a clean quality mulch, not only will this keep a nice consistent moisture for the tomatoes, it will also suppress the weeds. Once they are all mulched, its time to give them a drink. I like to recommend a seaweed tonic initially, as this helps avoid transplant shock and stimulates growth, however water is just fine. A thorough watering will get them underway and before you know it there will be fruit for your labour.

The next step is to be creative, even though we have planted deep, and they will develop strong roots and stems, we still need to support the plants. You can spend massive amounts of money on special cages/frames etc but the best way is to use what you have laying around. From chicken wire, stakes or even parts of the rusty old swing set out back. Create frames and trestles from just about anything as long as it can support your tomatoes to grow on. This part is fun, think outside the box and come up with something bizarre and interesting, why not old bike wheels?.. so which ever you decide as long as its solid it will work.

Care and Maintenance - As you watch them grow, there isn't a lot of care that really is required, however here are a few of my tricks that see them grow. Keep stems and leaves off the ground, cut off and leaves/branches that are close or touching the ground, as this will prevent disease and rot. If there are a large stems hanging down, you can tie them up to your frame. Moisture - tomatoes love consistent moisture, but not wet, depending on your location you may require to water them more often then other areas, however when watering do not water the foliage, water around the base as excess water on the leaves can cause rot and disease. Pruning isn't really necessary, although if I see a new stem coming of the main stem, I like to cut it back, as it will sap energy from the plant, and if I see any unhappy leaves that look like they may have disease or pests be sure to remove them.

Now that you have a tonne of tomatoes growing you can kick back and enjoy the red juicy fruits of your hard work.

Since there are so many Varieties available you can choose the tomatoes you love, however I always suggest to plant a couple of different varieties as they are lovely companions together. Furthermore, why not plant some basil amongst them, so when you pick your fresh red tom's you can pluck some basal at the same time!

Well that's it from me today! So...

           GET DIRTY and DIG IN!

Living in Australia we have fantastic reasons to be planting fruit trees in your yards and gardens. Given our fabulous climate all year round you can grow many varieties to see fruit all year.

If you are looking at buying or even starting out planting fruit trees at your home then check out the following reasons.

Whilst there are countless varieties available through Australia, from the regular through to exotic species, they all hold great benefits and should form part of your garden.

Benefits of Fruit Trees around your Home?

Well this is most likely the most obvious reason.... FOOD! Fruit trees make FOOD.. You get to enjoy the delicious taste of your fruit growing in your own back yard. With a little care and maintenance your trees can provide an abundance of fresh fruit to feed not just your family but the extended family as well. What could be better than home grown fresh fruit full of rich nutrients at your back door.

With all the worry and hype of environmental impact such as global warming, CO2 emissions etc. what's a better way than to reduce your carbon footprint by planting Fruit Tree's. The benefits of planting Fruit trees in your garden will not only reduce your carbon footprint, but also create a cooler environment as a whole. In addition; they filter your air! that's right, they clean the air and create oxygen. Further, Shade from your fruit tree's will also save on cooling costs, if planted in the right position they can provide shade to your home keeping the scorching summer sun at bay.

The next Reason is debatable, however in most circumstances growing fruit tree's increase your property value. Whilst this is a debated topic, to the right buyer established fruit tree's will give you a nice little boost when it comes to selling your property.

Diverse variety - with the amount of species there is Fruit tree options in abundance. From dwarf varieties suited to pots and tree's for full blown orchards. So depending on your circumstances, if you live in a unit or on acreage there are Fruit Trees to suit you. Not a green thumb! that's ok too there will be Fruit tree's that will thrive.

Native Animals - While we get to benefit from our fruit trees, with the delicious taste of home grown food, cooling environment of their shade and sweet smelling flowers and aromas, I feel that one of the biggest benefits is for native animals. Not only are we feeding ourselves, we are creating a habitat for all kinds of animals and insects, from our busy Bee's to ground dwelling critters eating the fallen fruit. Having an abundance of flowering tree's will bring all types of beautiful wildlife to your home.

Whilst these are only a very few Benefits, with very little work you can create a bustling environment in your yard that not only will give you endless supply of food, will bring many associated benefits to your home and family. Until next time!

Winter Time

           Roses!

Winter is the ideal time to give your roses some attention. Tackle the task of pruning your rose bushes this June or July! Prune them back to 1/3 of the original plant to allow more exposure to sunlight, encourage new growth and reduce disease!

If you’re in a colder climate of Australia hold off a hard prune until early August to avoid frosts killing off the new shoots, before they’ve had a chance to sprout!

Three weeks after your winter prune, we recommend fertilizing your roses with our NEW Rose and Flower Fertilizer granules and continue to apply this every 6 weeks.

If you want even more out of your blooms in the next season, apply a good dose of our NEW Neptune Liquid Seaweed every 3 weeks and mulch around your rose bushes with our poultry manure enhanced Not Just Mulch. Your Rose bushes will be healthy, full of new growth and an abundance of bright, colourful blooms come Spring!

We plant on Katek Super Growth and on flowering, side dress with Katek N Phoska which has the right amount of nitrogen to boost yield and potash to give large size of pods. We have stopped using chemical fertiliser all together now, we see the great advantage of Katek products which are looking after our soil”
